Sitter / Barfoot Veteran's Care Center in Virginia
September 26th a new Veteran's Care Center was opened in Richmond, Virginia with Ruth Sitter, wife of Puebloan Carl Sitter ( MOH) and Van Barfoot, a Virginia MOH, in attendance. This facility will house 160 veteran's entering the nursing home stage of care. It is located next door to the Virginia Veteran's Hospital.
Pueblo Medal of Honor Foundation members Jim and Paulette Stuart toured the facility with Mrs. Sitter several weeks before the grand opening and were impressed with the facility.
The press release states: "This is a state-of-the-art facility," said Department of Veterans Services Commissioner Vince Burgess. It's all on one floor and features 160 single-occupancy rooms in three nursing units. We will have two 60-bed skilled nursing care units and one 40-bed Alzheimer's dementia unit with enclosed courtyards. The design of SBVCC reflects the latest in health care facility design and research. All rooms are single occupancy to limit the spread of infectious diseases and assure residents a level of privacy essential to their mental well-being. Each room has a floor-to-ceiling window, private bath and walk-in shower. The Alzheimer's unit features a wander garden and interconnected hallways allowing residents to move around freely in a safe and secure environment.
Mrs. Sitter spoke at the dedication that Carl would be pleased veterans would find a safe haven within the walls of this new facility.
