Pueblo Medal of Honor Foundation Partners with HARP to Recognize Veterans
Veterans in Pueblo are getting a chance for recognition for their service to our country with the purchase of a space on a bridge to be built in the Historic Arkansas Riverwalk area. The names of those veterans are in the database provided at the Pueblo Medal of Honor display inside the Pueblo Convention Center or here on our website.
What is HARP?
The Historic Arkansas Riverwalk of Pueblo is a 26-acre urban waterfront experience. Visitors can access pedestrian paths surrounding the entire area as well as access bike paths, which connect to bike trails leading to Lake Pueblo.
Lake Elizabeth, located on the West Side of the project has a lakeside promenade designed to provide a natural area for waterfowl, fish and other wildlife. Recreational and educational opportunities abound.
The original Arkansas River stone wall has been incorporated into the design, creating a historic setting and theme which is carried throughout the project. Along the river channel several signature construction projects add to the ambiance of the area.
Gateway Park's Veteran's Bridge Project
Pueblo, as the "Home of Heroes", has the opportunity to recognize ALL Veterans who are part of our community. As part of Gateway Park on the Riverwalk a bridge dedicated to our communities Veterans will be built. Any honorably discharged or active service veteran with ties to Pueblo can be recognized and have their name included on the bridge with their dates of service and branch for a $75.00 contribution to the bridge fund. Any veteran of the Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force, Coast Guard or Merchant Marine can have their name on the bridge.
Each of the granite plates on the bridge will show approximately 200 names of veteran's with their date of service and branch of the service.
As the names have come into the HARP office, a letter has been sent to let the donor know that additional information on their veteran can be given at no extra charge and will be put on a touch screen computer which is located at the Pueblo Medal of Honor display case in the Pueblo Convention Center. This data base has the names of over 3,400 Medal of Honor recipients and now will be expanded to give you a choice of looking at the Medal of Honor recipients or the Veteran's Bridge information. Forms mailed back can include photos and more data on the veteran. This data base will be updated each month as names come in.
When the bridge is completed in the summer of 2008, as the plates are created, the plate identification, the column and row where the names are located will be indicated on the data base.
At this time we only have those veteran's whose additional data has been sent in. When competed all names will be listed.
